The Fifth SIAM International Conference on Data Mining continues the tradition of providing an open forum for the presentation and discussion of innovative algorithms as well as novel applications of data mining. Advances in information technology and data collection methods have led to the availability of large data sets in commercial enterprises and in a wide variety of scientific and engineering disciplines. The field of data mining draws upon extensive work in areas such as statistics, machine learning, pattern recognition, databases, and high performance computing to discover interesting and previously unknown information in data. This conference results in data mining, including applications, algorithms, software, and systems.

This conference was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, July 10-14, 2000. This volume contains papers presented at the conference covering a broad range of topics in theoretical and applied wave propagation in the general areas of acoustics, electromagnetism, and elasticity. Both direct and inverse problems are well represented. This volume, along with the three previous ones, presents a state-of-the-art primer for research in wave propagation. The conference is conducted by the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique with the cooperation of SIAM.

This volume contains selected papers that focus on the use of linear algebra, computational statistics, and computer science in the development of algorithms and software systems for text retrieval. Experts in information modeling and retrieval share their perspectives on the design of scalable but precise text retrieval systems, revealing many of the challenges and obstacles that mathematical and statistical models must overcome to be viable for automated text processing. This very useful proceedings is an excellent companion for courses in information retrieval, applied linear algebra, and applied statistics.

The Austrian Center for Parallel Computation (ACPC) is a cooperative research organization founded in 1989 to promote research and education in the field of software for parallel computer systems. The areas in which the ACPC is active include algorithms, languages, compilers, programming environments, and applications for parallel and high-performance computing systems. This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference of the ACPC, held in Gmunden, Austria, October 1993. Authors from 17 countries submitted 44 papers, of which 15 were selected for inclusion in this volume, which also includes 4 invited papers by distinguished researchers. The volume is organized into parts on architectures (2 papers), algorithms (7 papers), languages (6 papers), and programming environments (4 papers).

Large-scale changes are taking place in the way modelling is performed within the US EPA, and a new generation of environmental models is currently under construction. The US EPA is engaging in several modelling efforts in response to Congressional mandates such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. These mandates require the scientific modelling of the impact of pollutants on human health and the environment. The complexity of scale in environmental models has increased by several orders of magnitude, with a simultaneous demand for increased stability, accuracy and efficiency in the computed model solution. This book showcases numerical algorithms appropriate to the subject areas listed below and explores how new algorithmic methods would benefit the US EPA's environmental models and other environmental studies.

The Fourth SIAM International Conference on Data Mining continues the tradition of providing an open forum for the presentation and discussion of innovative algorithms as well as novel applications of data mining. This is reflected in the talks by the four keynote speakers who discuss data usability issues in systems for data mining in science and engineering, issues raised by new technologies that generate biological data, ways to find complex structured patterns in linked data, and advances in Bayesian inference techniques. This proceedings includes 61 research papers.
